Weld Testing

Picture
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a written document formally outlining welding procedures, designed to guide the welder or welding operators on how to consistently make quality production welds as per the code requirements. New welding procedures must be written for each welding type used every time a manufacturer develops more technologically advanced forms of steel.

Weld Procedure Qualification Testing typically includes the following test types:
  • Tensile Testing
  • Guided Bend Testing
  • Charpy Impact Testing
  • Macro Weld Evaluation
  • Vickers Micro-hardness
  • Chemical Composition Analysis

Expert Welding Consulting

Some weld test companies may be willing to provide a general welding procedure for a specific material which technically satisfies code requirements like ASME IX; however, there are many variables that go into writing a customized welding procedure that fits your organization.  Some of these variables include:
  • Type of material
  • Welding process (GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW, SMAW,)
  • Material thickness range
  • Material diameter range
  • Welding position
  • Filler material
Also, it is important to think about the type of equipment you have, the range at which your equipment is operating, and if you are properly set up to weld a procedure for the specific application you want to run.

Specific codes and/or engineering societies are often the driving force behind the development of a company's WPS. A WPS is supported by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR or WPQR). A PQR is a record of a weld test performed and tested (more rigorously) to ensure that the procedure will produce a good weld.  Welder Qualification Test Record (WQTR) is a document that certifies a welder is competent to perform a specific WPS.

AWS Certified Welding Inspectors are on staff to write and test your next welding procedure in accordance with ASME, ASNI, API, and AWS specifications.
